The Value of Art to the Child

Why is art so important?

  • Develops creative thinking
  • Provides means of communication and self-expression
  • Increases self-understanding
  • Strengthens self-concepts and confidence
  • Serves as an emotional release
  • Provides decision-making opportunities
  • Develops appreciation for the individuality of others
  • Aids the adult in understanding and helping the child
  • Heightens aesthetic awareness and  sensitivity
  • Generates joy

Special note to those who work with young artists:  Keep in mind that it is the process of creating art and the doing that is meaningful to the child.  The finished product is secondary.
